Inside Screamers: Conversations with the Director |
April 17, 2008
What --
The evening will begin with a FREE screening of director Carla Garapedian and System of a Down's critically acclaimed political tour movie, Screamers.
Q&A and discussion session immediately following screening.
Reception immediately thereafter. Complimentary refreshments and hors d'oeuvres will be served.
When/Where --
Event will be held at the James Bridges Theater on UCLA's campus (Melnitz Hall 1409) beginning at 7:30 pm. Tickets will be released at the Melnitz box office one hour prior to the event.
About the Film --
Screamers is an impassioned synthesis of concert film and political expose about System of a Down's intensely personal campaign to stop genocide. Chronicling the band's efforts to persuade both the British and U.S. governments to recognize the Armenian genocide, Screamers also traces the history of modern-day genocide - and genocide denial.
The Holocaust, Pol Pot's Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, Darfur...and every time a U.S. President, a British Prime Minister, a U.N. Secretary General says "Never again." Yet it happens - again, and again and again

-The importance of ensuring the proper recognition and justice for genocides to prevent future occurrences
It is our intent to focus on the Armenian Genocide and Jewish Holocaust, examining similarities and differences between the denial of these atrocities and the responses of the world community to such denials. Armenian Liturgy Discussion Series |
February 05, 2008
Have you ever wondered what all those long and tricky words mean in Church? Or why people make the sign of the cross or bow down when they do? Well now is your chance to find out.
The AGSA will be holding a discussion series in the upcoming weeks centered on the Divine Liturgy of the Armenian Apostolic Church, or Soorp Badarak. This will be a unique opportunity to gain useful instruction and review on terminology, significance of what we do in Church, connections of our Liturgy with the Bible, and history of the Church.
DISCUSSION #1 - FEB 5, 2008
The first lecture will cover the basics of the organization of the Liturgy and liturgical Krapar (classical Armenian). It will be held on Tuesday, Feb 5 at 8:00 p.m. in the AGSA Conference room, Kerckhoff 138.
DISCUSSION #2 - FEB 12, 2008
The second lecture will be a group read-along of the Liturgy, from beginning to end, with time for ample questions as we go along. We will be using/reading specially prepared, easy-to-follow packets that have the Armenian, the literal English Translation, and the practical meanings and applications of the entire Liturgy. This lecture will be held on Tuesday, February 12 at 8:00 p.m., also in the AGSA Conference room.

Conversations with Shant Kenderian: |
October 25, 2007
The Shocking Story of an Armenian-American Forced to Fight for Saddam Against the Country He Loves
Synopsis (taken from the book's publisher Simon & Schuster):
Shant Kenderian's visit to Baghdad in 1980, at age seventeen, was supposed to be a short one -- just enough time to make peace with his estranged father before returning to his home in the United States. But then Saddam Hussein invaded Iran and sealed off Iraq's borders to every man of military age -- including Shant. Suddenly forced onto the front lines, his two-week visit turned into a nightmare that lasted for ten years.
1001 Nights in Iraq presents a human story that provides unique insight into a country and culture that we only get a hint of in the headlines. After surviving the horrors of the Iran-Iraq War, Shant was then forced to fight on the front lines of Desert Storm without being given the proper equipment, including a gun, but miraculously survived to be captured by the Americans and become a POW. He underwent starvation, heavy interrogations, and solitary confinement, but what broke him in the end was his love affair with a female American soldier. Yet throughout this whole ordeal, Shant never lost his respect for people, his faith in God, or his sense of humor.
His book has received a number of positive reviews from critics from the New York Times, Entertianment Weekly among others.
