Appointments: GSA Needs You!

The Graduate Students Association does most of its work through the various campus-based committees. This work is done through the hard work of volunteers who share their time and experience to improve campus life for graduate and professional students (click here for a list of current appointees). WHY DOES GSA NEED ME?

What good is a body without a voice

UCLA's graduate student body represents some of the nation's brightest, highly motivated, successful students.  And through the Graduate Students Association or GSA, your voice can be heard thanks to a variety of programs.  Among them, university academic and campus committees are an important way to ensure that right.  When you participate in one of over 50 university committees, you play an active role in helping make some of the most important decisions concerning university life.  GSA currently has 32 stipended and approximately 44 non-stipended graduate student representatives to various supervisory boards and administrative and advisory committees at UCLA.

if you want to be heard, speak up

Serving on a committee won't take up a lot of your time.  What it will take is an honest desire on your part to effect changes.  As a committee member, you can see that your experiences and perspectives as a graduate students will be considered before any new rules or programs are implemented, thereby helping the University to be sensitive to the needs of graduate students.

getting involved isn't a lifetime commitment

More important, you'll be representing the majority of the student body, giving them a voice that otherwise might not be heard.  But the best reason for serving on a campus committee is how it can advance your status.  Prospects for employment can improve when your resume reflects an active university life, plus, you'll generate more contacts among faculty.  When all is said and done, the more you have to say about your accomplishments, the better.

the best way to speak up is to sign up

Naturally, serving on a university committee is both an honor and a terrific opportunity for graduate students.  For this reason, positions fill quickly, so it's important to get your application in to the Graduate Students Association as soon as possible.
