LA Premiere: TIME & TIDE (Julie Bayer & Josh Salzman, 2006)
Event Date: October 12, 2011 - 7:30pm
Location: The James Bridges Theater, Melnitz Hall 1409, UCLA
This documentary film centers on a group of expatriates from the tiny island nation of Tuvalu, most returning to the island for the first time in years. Eagerly anticipating arriving in their beloved homeland, their nostalgia quickly gives way to the reality that they are ill-prepared for the Tuvalu that awaits them. A multi-million dollar deal with an internet company has brought new development, altering the landscape and bringing flocks of foreigners to the capital. As the locals and expats both struggle to cope with the severe cultural change due to globalization, a greater threat looms on the horizon. Driven by climate change resulting from global warming, a steadily rising sea level is stealing their precious and already limited land. Tuvalu, as an entire nation, is slated to be the world’s first environmental refugees, and a migration scheme is taking shape.
Co-presented with the UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance and the GSA Sustainable Resource Center, Directors Julie Bayer and Josh Salzman will be in person for a post-show Q&A with 36 Tuvaluan citizens. Tropical-themed snacks & refreshments will be provided during a reception.

“The heartwrenching and beautiful film TIME AND TIDE is like one of Gauguin's rare, found-object sculptures, simultaneously celebrating a precious, edenic time and place while calling attention to the fact that it is perhaps lost forever. The documentary is wonderfully photographed and subtly directed by Josh Salzman and Julie Bayer who both warm and break your heart.” –Rob Bindler, director of HANDS ON A HARD BODY
“A timely, resonant story of a nation's literal struggle for survival in the face of conflicts both internal and external.
