Nominations Open for GSA Hanson Distinguished Service Awards and Lu Valle Distinguished Service Awards. Deadline Thursday, May 20 @ 12 p.m.

Every year, the Graduate Students Association (GSA) recognizes graduate/professional students, staff, faculty, and administrators who have served graduate/professional students in extraordinary ways. We are currently accepting nominations for both the Hanson Distinguished Service Awards (for graduate/professional students) and the Lu Valle Distinguished Service Awards (for staff, faculty, and administrators). Additional information about the Hanson and Lu Valle Awards can be found on the GSA website (gsa.asucla.ucla.edu). Award recipients will be presented at the GSA End-of-the-Year Awards and Appreciation Event, Wednesday, May 26 @ 4 pm.

NOMINATION PROCESS:

Please send an e-mail to vpaa@gsa.asucla.ucla.edu and staff@gsa.asucla.ucla.edu no later than THURSDAY, MAY 20 @ 12 pm with the following information:

Candidate’s Name, Department, Phone #, E-mail address: Position Held, Nominator’s Name, Nominator’s E-mail Address

A brief description (up to 2 pages double-spaced) of the candidate's service to graduate/professional students. Please elaborate on the selection criteria listed in the Awards description listed below:

HANSON DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS:

The purpose of the GSA Jeffrey L. Hanson Distinguished Service Awards is to acknowledge those individuals who have served the Graduate Students Association and represented the interests and concerns of graduate and professional students at UCLA during each academic year. The Award is named after Jeffrey L. Hanson, GSA Vice President-Internal Affairs 1989-90, as a memorial for his service and dedication to the GSA.

The following shall be the Award selection categories:

GSA Jeffrey L. Hanson Distinguished Service Award for Representative to the GSA (e.g., Forum, GSRCOC, GWCOC, SACBOG, Council Leadership, Department Representatives to Councils)

GSA Jeffrey L. Hanson Distinguished Service Award for Non-Stipended Appointments (e.g., Academic Senate, Campus-wide, Policy Committees)

GSA Jeffrey L. Hanson Distinguished Service Award for Stipended Appointments (e.g., ASUCLA Board of Directors, Communications Board, CAC, CPC, SFAC, SHAC, Cabinet)

Awards and/or Recognition
The recipients of the Awards shall be presented during GSA End-of-the-Year Awards and Appreciation Event, to be held Wednesday, 5/26 @ 4 pm. Letters of recognition will be sent to both the recipients and their departments.

Nomination of Candidates
All eligible individuals can be nominated either by themselves or by another graduate/professional student who has been familiar with their activities during the relevant academic year. No preference will be given to individuals nominated by others. Letters of recommendation are also welcomed. Only individuals shall be eligible – not a group of appointees, employees, etc. Elected officers during the relevant academic year are not eligible. An individual can be nominated in more than one selection category but is not eligible to receive an award in more than one category.

Selection Criteria
Nomination forms for candidates in each selection category shall be grouped by category and a single individual is to be chosen for each category. Selection of and individual for an Award is based on:
Service(s) performed for the GSA and the graduate student population
Issues(s) addressed that affect the graduate student population
Effectiveness of communicating the concerns and positions of graduate students
Effectiveness of communicating the concerns and positions of others to graduate students
Length of service to the GSA and positions held

Selection Process
The outgoing GSA officers will be responsible for selecting the award recipients.

LU VALLE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS:

The purpose of the GSA James Lu Valle Distinguished Service Awards is to acknowledge those faculty, staff and administrators who have served the needs of graduate students above and beyond what is expected. The Award is named after James Lu Valle, the first Graduate Students Association President, for his service and dedication in forming the UCLA GSA.

The following shall be the selection categories to be considered for the Awards:

GSA James Lu Valle Distinguished Service Award for Faculty

GSA James Lu Valle Distinguished Service Award for Staff

GSA James Lu Valle Distinguished Service Award for Administrator

For the purposes of this award, the following definitions apply. Faculty are professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and lecturers. Staff are university employees who may work within a department or university unit. Administrators are individuals holding positions such as Dean, Provost, Vice Chancellor, and similar positions.

Awards and/or Recognition
The recipients of the Awards will be presented during the GSA End-of-the-Year Awards and Appreciation Event, to be held Wednesday, May 26 @ 4 pm. Letters of recognition will be sent to the recipients. Faculty receiving an award will also have a letter sent to the Academic Senate. Staff receiving an award will also have a letter sent to the Staff Assembly.
