The following are all the stipended appointments of the GSA. These positions are appointed by the GSA Forum based on nominations by the Appointments Board using the procedures defined in the Appointments Section of the GSA Codes. This list shall be subject to revision by the GSA Forum. All the below positions include a monthly stipend; stipends typically range from $600 to $1300 per quarter. GSA Cabinet Positions

The GSA Cabinet consists of the four officers and those Directors who have been approved by the Forum (see listing above). All members of the Cabinet are voting members. The GSA Cabinet meets on a regular basis to discuss program reviews, graduate academic issues, GSA central office management and other topics. Cabinet members are expected to attend all cabinet meetings including any cabinet meetings with UCLA administration. Cabinet typically meets 3 times per quarter by itself on Wednesday nights, and occasionally one meeting with UCLA administration. Cabinet members receive stipends and are eligible for parking permits.

Director of Communication

Stipend: $1300 per quarter
Time commitment: 8-10 hours per week

  • Outreach/Information
    • Responsible for GSA's overall marketing and communications creative strategy, identity, and message development.
    • Introduces new and creative approaches to marketing and communications content and channels designed to recognize, inspire and inform target audience.
    • Provide oversight of the development, design, implementation and editorial direction of effective print, electronic, web and video communications developed by the GSA, including writing, editing, proofreading, design, photography, video creation and production for newsletters, brochures, invitations, events programs, letters, reports, proposals, e-communications, press materials, advertising campaigns, volunteer communications, and marketing materials.

    • Evaluates the effectiveness and success of GSA communication vehicles on an ongoing basis.

Director of Community Interaction

Stipend: $1300 per quarter
Time commitment: 8-10 hours/week

  • Outreach/Information
    • Coordinate student-organized and student-initiated activities that concern themselves with the social, political, environmental, and/or educational improvement of the community surrounding the campus.
    • Represent GSA and its activities to the campus community, including campus advisory and funding boards, and to campus committees charged with working on issues related to disadvantaged communities.
    • Represent GSA in regard to local community projects and student interest in community issues.
    • Willing to travel to other UC campuses (if involved with UCSA next year)
    • Attend SIG and other on-campus group meetings to stay informed about issues facing graduate students, act as the GSA representative to present the collective graduate student voice at cabinet meetings
    • Follow up with emails and visits these groups at least once/twice a quarter.

Director of Discretionary Funding

Stipend: $1300 per quarter
Time commitment: 10 hours/week during
the first week of the month
5 hours/week during the remaining weeks

  • Outreach/Information
    • Meet with Center for Student Programming contact at the beginning of the year to review available funding sources for student groups
    • Meet with Student Government Accounting contact at the beginning of the year to review funding/reimbursement policies/procedures
    • Provide student groups with updated forms, checklists, deadlines, and guidelines for funding and reimbursement requests
    • Hold information sessions at the beginning of each quarter to inform student groups of available funding sources, and funding/reimbursement policies/procedures
    • Disseminate information about available funding sources to GSA Forum, GSA Councils, and other graduate student bodies/organizations
    • Answer questions from student groups regarding available funding sources , and funding/reimbursement policies/procedures
    • Direct student groups to Student Government Accounting (as needed) to follow up on expense reimbursement for student events
    • Regularly attend events receiving GSA discretionary funds to interact with graduate student leaders and organizers
  • Administration/Paperwork
    • Update the discretionary funding application, checklist, deadlines, and guidelines, and revise the template for award letters, at the beginning of the year
    • Evaluate funding requests based on purpose of event, size of event, expected attendance, and proposed budget, and request additional information as needed
    • Define and revise parameters for funding allocations (as needed) in response to funding issues (i.e.what constitutes “necessary” event expenses – decorations, prizes, etc.)
    • Review and process funding applications: Confirm active registration for student groups, inclusion of necessary signatures, and receipt of event approval from CSP advisors.
    • Assemble and disseminate award letters: Request and obtain event account numbers from Student Government Accounting, allocate funds based on proposed budgets
    • Review and process reimbursement forms: Ensure accurate completion of reimbursement forms, including detailed expense information, event account numbers, student group and GSA cabinet signatures, and original dated receipts
    • Maintain accurate records of initial/revised applications, event flyers, event summaries, and event account numbers assigned by Student Government Accounting
    • Track funding allocations and discretionary funding account status throughout the year

Director of Graduate Events

Stipend: $1300 per quarter
Time commitment: 10-15 hours per event
5-6 hours at the event (including set up, supervising & clean up)

  • Purpose
    • To promote interaction among graduate students and provide the opportunity for community building
  • Outreach/Information
    • Organize and supervise graduate student events
    • Focus on social and cultural programming for GSA
    • Serve as a direct liaison with vendors and entertainment; maintain existing relationships and establish new relationships
    • Collaborate with other departments and groups on campus including but not limited to the Graduate Student Resource Center, GSA Elections, GSA Community Service Commission, Melnitz Movies, and the UCLA Department of Cultural and Recreational Affairs
    • Advertise events to student body through Facebook, email, website, etc.
  • Administrative Work
    • Monitor email account daily!
    • Plan and execute minimum of 3-4 events per quarter per director (if position is co-ed)
    • Allocate events budget across 3 quarters and maintain expenditures

Director of Melnitz Movies

Stipend: $2000 per quarter
Time commitment: 25 hour per week

  • Outreach/Information
    • Attend press screenings and film festivals and view screeners to search for films.
    • Work with the School of Theater, Film and Television and the Documentary Salon to bring in top films and filmmakers
    • Work with the Film Traffic Coordinator and James Bridges Theater Manager to organize screenings
    • Arrange post-screening Q&A sessions with filmmakers and moderators. Oversee publicity efforts: posting film listings on appropriate websites and media outlets, printing schedule flyers, securing movie posters and trailers, and fostering co-sponsorships with university departments and organizations.
    • Oversee individual screenings, working with the James Bridges Theater staff and introducing films.
  • Administrative work
    • Program 20 films per quarter on two designated evenings per week.
    • Book films through publicists, distributors, and studios.
    • Update and maintain the Melnitz Movies website and send out bi-weekly screening announcements to the list-serv.
    • Maintain Melnitz Movies budget ($33-35,000), submitting budget requisitions to Student Government Accounting for all expenses.
    • Hire, train and supervise assistant(s) to help out with Melnitz Movies duties.

Director of Publications

Stipend: $1300per quarter
Time commitment: 8-10 hours per week

  • Outreach/Information
    • Cultivate awareness at UCLA of publications program
    • Advise existing journals when appropriate, especially as regards financial and procedural matters
    • Guide and encourage new journals; develop resources for online journal publications
    • Offer university-wide publication workshops where need and opportunity arise
    • Maintain and improve publications Computer Lab

    • Field applications from GSA-funded journals

    • Review and sign paperwork releasing allocations throughout the year
    • Keep current requisition paperwork, field email and other inquiries

      • Assemble contact list of current editors, review finances for current year

      • Work on develop (capital investment on online resources, updating/editing of procedures, outreach and long-range planning)

Director of the Sustainable Resource Center

Stipend: $1300per quarter
Time commitment: averages 5-7 hours a week (less when no meetings, more leading up to events)

  • Outreach/Information
    • Promote sustainable living and awareness of environmental among graduate students.
    • Coordinate with green coordinators at University Apartments South and Weyburn Terrace.
    • Maintain and develop the Sustainable Resource Center library and internet presence (web site, Facebook page, other media).
    • Act as a liaison to, support, and co-sponsor events with graduate student groups including but notlimited to Net Impact, Engineers Without Borders, Sustainable Urban Network, and undergraduate groups such as E3 and the Education for Sustainable Living Program.
    • Work with the graduate Leaders in Sustainability program to organize and co-sponsor social and academic events open to those in the program and those interested in the program
    • Serve on the UCLA Sustainability Committee and The Green Initiative Fund board as a graduate student representative.

    • Chief administrator for the Sustainable Resource Center. Oversee development of the SustainableResource Center.
    • Coordinates the operations and programs of the Sustainable Resource Center.
    • Responsible for overseeing funding allocation and managing project coordinators.
    • Ensure that the organization meets all UCLA and GSA rules and policies.
    • Direct one undergraduate employee.

ASUCLA Board of Directors

Stipend: $1200 per quarter
Time commitment: Approximately 20 hours per month
Associated Students UCLA (ASUCLA) is the not-for-profit organization which operates the Student Union, Bookstores, Restaurants, and Trademarks & Licensing at UCLA.

  • Purpose:
    • The Board of Directors, a student majority board, oversees ASUCLA's mission as a responsive, student-centered organization to improve the quality of life on campus by providing innovative and excellent services, programs, products, and facilities for the entire UCLA community. To these ends, the ASUCLA Board of Directors oversees all ASUCLA activities (including business management, fund expenditures, and decisions regarding services and entities on campus).
  • Workload:
    • Approximately 20 hours per month. The Board of Directors meets monthly, usually on the last Friday. The meeting begins at noon and runs as long as 6 hours. Prior to meeting, members read a thick agenda packet with detailed information about what we will be discussed at the monthly Board meeting.
    • Members also serve on one or more Standing Committees (Services, Finance, or Personnel), which hold 2 hour meetings at least once prior to each monthly Board meeting. Annual Orientation Retreat, 3 days, off-campus. All appointees MUST attend the three-day Orientation Retreat to be held Monday – Wednesday, June 15 – 17, 2009.
  • Composition:
    • 14 members: 4 GSA representatives, 4 USA, 1 faculty, 2 administrators, 2 alumni, and the ASUCLA Executive Director (ex-officio, non-voting). 10 votes: GSA 3, USA 3, Administration 2, Faculty 1, Alumni 1.

ASUCLA Communications Board

(4 GSA appointees)
2 TWO YEAR TERM
Stipend: $1200 per quarter
Time commitment: Approximately 20 hours per month

  • Purpose:
    • The Communications Board functions as the independent publisher, manager, and operator of student communications media (ASUCLA Communications Board Constitution, Art. I).
    • The three standing committees of the Communications Board are: (1) the Executive Committee, (2) the Finance Committee, (3) the Operations Committee. Publication of Daily Bruin, Al Talib, Bruin Life, Ha'Am, La Gente de Aztlan, Nommo, Pacific Ties, TenPercent, and FEM. Operation of KLA Radio.
  • Workload:
    • Meets more often during Spring Quarter to interview applicants for editor positions. Prior to monthly meeting, members read an agenda packet. Members also serve on one or more subcommittees (Finance; Rules; or Personnel, Projects, Planning), each of which meets once a month.
  • Composition:
    • 12 voting members: 4 GSA, 4 USA, 1 faculty, 1 administrator, 1 alumni, 3 professional journalists. One nonvoting member: the ASUCLA Media Director.

Student Fee Advisory Committee (SFAC)

2 TWO YEAR appointees, 1 ONE YEAR replacement appointee
Stipend: $1000 per quarter
Time commitment: Approximately 20 hours per month
SFAC is a committee of students nominated by student government (USAC and GSA) and appointed by the Chancellor. The committee also consists of staff members and one faculty representative.

  • Purpose:
    • SFAC advises the Chancellor on the allocation of Registration Fee (Reg Fee) funds and other issues related to student fees.
    • Provides the Chancellor with informed student input regarding services for which students are the primary clients.
    • Members also serve on various subcommittees and prepare oral and written reports for the general committee.
    • Income from the University Registration Fee is used to support services, which benefit students and are complementary to, but not a part of, the instructional program. These programs create a supportive learning environment and provide general student enrichment.
  • Workload:
    • Working Fall and Winter, in the Spring SFAC makes a formal recommendation to the Chancellor regarding the allocation of University Registration Fee funding.
    • Attending weekly general meetings where members deliberate and vote on matters concerning student fees and student services.
    • SFAC duties require attending two hour meetings each week throughout the academic year or twenty hours per quarter. In addition, there may be sub committee assignments for members when needed.
  • Composition:
    • 12 voting members: 4 GSA students, 4 USA students, 1 faculty, 3 administrators. One ex-officio, nonvoting member represents Office of Academic Planning and Budget.

Student Health

Advisory Committee (SHAC)
(4 GSA appointees)
2 TWO YEAR TERM
Stipend: $700 per quarter
Time commitment: Approximately 20 hours per month
Established in 1972 to provide student participation in the administration of the UCLA Student Health Service (SHS).

  • Purpose:
    • As the officially-recognized student adjunct to the SHS administration, SHAC channels student opinion into the structure and function of SHS.
    • The mission of SHAC is to insure that SHS promotes and provides high-quality, economical health care for UCLA students.
    • Regularly ascertains attitudes of the student body on matters pertaining to student health, continually develops and evaluates SHS programs.
    • Advises the Director of SHS on student concerns and priority matters, and advises in policy decision-making regarding SHS programs and staff.
  • Workload:
    • Meets four times per quarter during Fall and Spring Quarters for two hours each. Meets every-other week during Winter Quarter for one hour each, along with optional attendance at two-hour Winter Quarter Student Health Insurance Committee (SHIC) meetings
    • SHAC members often sit on the Student Health Insurance Committee as well.
  • Composition:
    • 8 voting members: 4 GSA, 4 USA. One nonvoting member: a SHS staff person appointed by the Director of SHS to serve as advisor and as liaison between SHAC and SHS.

Campus Programs Committee (CPC)

(4 GSA appointees)
ONE YEAR TERM
Stipend: $700 per quarter
Time commitment: Approximately 20 hours per month

  • Purpose:
    • Funding board responsible for reviewing proposals of, and providing funding for, student-initiated, student-operated programs offered to the UCLA student body. Decisions are based on criteria set forth in the Committee's guiding documents--the CPC Guidelines and the Program Activities Board Charter.
    • Solicits student views on the nature and goals of campus programming and holds hearings to allocate funds for campus programs.
  • Workload:
    • A four hour Orientation in August/September and continues to June.
    • Workload peaks during six funding periods per academic year, averaging two periods per quarter. A typical funding period consists of two to three nights of hearings (5 to 6 hours per session).
    • Each member also serves for one quarter on the CPC Mini-Fund Subcommittee (approximately 1 to 1.5 hours per week, during daytime hours of 2nd to 8th weeks).
    • Members attend one to two meetings per quarter of the Program Activities Board (PAB), an entity consisting of the CPC and the CAC sitting jointly.
  • Composition:
    • 9 members: 4 GSA, 4 USA, 1 administrator appointed by Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs.

Community Activities Committee (CAC)

ONE YEAR TERM
Stipend: $700 per quarter
Time commitment: Approximately 20 hours per month

  • Purpose:
    • Funding board responsible for reviewing proposals of, and providing funding for, student-initiated, student-operated community service projects and programs directed primarily at off-campus communities. Decisions are based on goals outlined in the Committee's guiding documents--the CAC Guidelines and the Program Activities Board Charter.
    • Acts as a forum for soliciting views on the nature and goals of community service and makes allocation decisions for community service projects.
  • Workload:
    • Must attend a four hour Orientation in August/September. Heavily concentrated during the second to fourth weeks of September, when CAC makes funding allocations for the academic year. After the Orientation session(s), 7 to 9 working sessions are required: 5 to 6 sessions to hear all project proposals, followed by 2 to 3 decision-making sessions. Sessions last 5 to 6 hours per night. (In 1991, the entire process from
    • Orientation to final decision-making was completed during September 10-24.)
  • Composition:
    • 9 members: 4 GSA representatives, 4 USA, 1 administrator appointed by Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs.

Commissioner of Elections

Stipend: $1300 per quarter for Winter and Spring quarter only

  • Outreach/Information
    • Inform campus media on the progress of election-related activities
    • Solicit candidates for GSA offices
    • Solicit representatives from each council to comprise the Elections Board
    • Publicize3 annual Elections to graduate and professional student body
    • Plan and administer logistics of elections (polling stations or online, incentives to vote, etc.)
  • Administrative Work
    • Assure that Elections are held in accordance with GSA Codes (section 9)
    • Chair the Elections Board and direct 4-6 meetings per year
    • Determine elections budget and schedule
    • Propose strategies to encourage voter turnout among graduate students
    • Certify results and present to GSA Forum
