Graduate Writing Center Information for Faculty

About the Graduate Writing Center

How We Started
The Graduate Writing Center is an initiative of the Graduate Students Association, funded by a GSA fee referendum, managed by Student Affairs, and overseen by the Graduate Writing Center Oversight Committee. Click here for more information.

GWC Writing Consultants
Our consultants come from a variety of fields and are trained to work with graduate students from all disciplines. Graduate students may find it helpful to meet with the writing consultants closest to their fields, but this is not required. Our consultants do not proofread/edit; they work interactively with graduate students to improve their writing skills. All of our writing consultants have been trained to work with ESL students. Click here for graduate writing consultant bios.

GWC Consulting Philosophy
In appointments graduate students may work on almost any kind of writing related to their academic work and professional development. Graduate students should come prepared to prioritize what parts of a document they will focus on, especially for longer texts. Our consulting philosophy outlines how our writing consultants work with graduate students. Click here to read our consulting philosophy.

GWC Policies
Please visit the policies web page for more information about Graduate Writing Center policies on appointments and usage.

Graduate Writing Center Programs and Workshops

Workshops
The Graduate Writing Center offers a variety of workshops on both general writing issues and specialized topics, such as dissertation and thesis writing. We hold targeted writing workshops for graduate students in the areas of Humanities & Arts, Social Sciences, and Sciences & Engineering. We also publicize research workshops being offered by the UCLA libraries. For more information about our workshops, click here.

Master's Thesis Writing Groups
The Graduate Writing Center is piloting a facilitated writing groups program that we hope to continue and expand. The deadline to join these groups in Spring 2008 has passed, but you can see the program description here.

Summer Dissertation-Writing Programs
We have a number of programs for graduate students at the dissertation and dissertation proposal stage. We have an overview of these programs here, and more specific information will be added the website as we get closer to the summer.

Policy on Referrals

Faculty are in the best position to bring writing problems to the attention of their graduate students, and we value our ability to collaborate with faculty. If you have concerns with a graduate student's writing, we ask that you fill out our writing evaluation form or provide similar comments in writing that the graduate student may bring to a consultation appointment.

Unlike Covel Tutorials, the writing center for UCLA undergraduate students, we do not take referrals directly from faculty. As a service for graduate students, we stress the responsibility and initiative of the student. We do hope that you will encourage graduate students to use our services, and we provide the writing evaluation form to help you help your graduate students to focus on key writing issues.

We also discourage faculty from making it a course requirement to have appointments at our center. We have limited resources, so we prefer graduate students to determine when and whether they would like to use our services. If you have questions or would like to ask about alternatives, please contact the GWC coordinator.

Privacy Policy

All services are confidential. No information about graduate student use of our service will be released except what is required by university policy or by law.
