GSA and USAC Resolution to Expand Bruin Go!Whereas, UCLA is the 2nd largest Traffic Area in Los Angeles next to LAX; Whereas, UCLA has an agreement with the City of Los Angeles that limits the number of daily trips to campus at 139,500; Whereas, an average of 60,000 vehicles park at UCLA every day even though there are approximately 20,000 parking spaces; Whereas, a 2002 UCLA study has shown that the Bruin Go! Program has noticeably decreased the demand for commuter parking permits (of nearly 1380 spaces); Whereas, the Bruin Go! Program serves as direct financial aid to students, is a more environmentally friendly mode of transportation, and increases access to the university; Whereas, the Bruin Go! Program serves all 52,700 members of the UCLA campus community of faculty, staff and students; Whereas, the cost to run Bruin Go! has revealed it to be the most cost effective mode of transit in comparison to Transportation Services’ other transit programs namely parking, vanpools, carpools and campus shuttles; Whereas, the new Intramural field parking lot will cost over $47 million ($31,500 per parking space) to build; Whereas, the proposed fee increases in all parking permits do not augment resources of any alternative transportation programs or compensate university employees for the fee increases, Be it resolved the BruinGo! Program be a permanent program facilitated by Transportation Services that includes Culver City, MTA and Santa Monica Transit Systems, Be it further resolved that Transportation Services convert the 1,380 freed up commuter permit spaces to daily sales spaces to generate income to fund Bruin Go!, Therefore, Transportation Services and the University should take a stronger, more active approach in providing affordable, effective, and convenient forms of transportation for the campus population. |
