GSA Resolution to Endorse the Graduate Writing Center ReferendumPassed by Forum on March 8, 2006 WHEREAS The Graduate Students Association represents approximately 10,500 graduate and professional school students at the University of California, Los Angeles, WHEREAS the 2002 HEDS survey revealed that three of the top five needs cited by UCLA graduate students relate to writing and professional development, WHEREAS writing assistance is the service requested most by UCLA graduate students who visit the Graduate Student Resource Center, WHEREAS writing assistance is a major issue in the recruitment and retention of international and under-represented graduate students, WHEREAS writing skills are vital to the academic and professional success of graduate students, WHEREAS all of UCLA’s peer institutions provide structured, comprehensive writing assistance for their graduate students, WHEREAS no campus-wide writing assistance is available to UCLA graduate students, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Graduate Students Association (GSA) calls for the creation of a Graduate Writing Center that shall serve the academic and professional writing needs of the entire graduate student community, including but not limited to: academic writing (all graduate levels), thesis and dissertation writing, professional presentations and public speaking, grant and fellowship proposal writing, and writing for publication, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Graduate Writing Center shall be overseen by a committee with a graduate-student majority appointed by GSA, BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED THAT the GSA endorses the Graduate Writing Center referendum, in which the GSA fee would be increased by $3 per quarter to fund the base budget (personnel and operating costs) of the Graduate Writing Center.
