Families and Child Care

Graduate programs can last many years, and many graduate and professional students are starting and raising families at the same time that they pursue their studies. They face particular social, psychological, and financial challenges. GSA supports family-friendly policies and initiatives whenever possible.

Here are a few resources that may be helpful to students with young children. Most daycare providers and preschools in Los Angeles have waitlists, so it is advisible to begin your research early:

• UCLA Early Care and Education - Full-time care only, for infants 2 months through kindergarten (see also University Village Kindergarten); application fee is waived for students; application for a limited number of scholarships occurs in May and June.
• Infant Development Program - Offers full-time care for infants and toddlers; run by UCLA Psychology Department.
• University Parents Nursery School - Offers full and part-time care, with fairly flexible schedules, for ages 2-5; a co-op school where parents are required to participate.
• UCLA Child Care Resource Program - Offers personal consultation and referrals to child care providers on the Westside.
• UCLA Center for Women and Men - Occasionally offers programs for parents; can provide lactation space for students; call (310) 825-3945 for more information.
• Connections for Children - CFC is a non-profit child care resource and referral agency serving the Westside and South Bay.
