Monday, April 24
California Campus Compact and Stanford University will convene a symposium on April 24, 2006 for graduate-level faculty, administrators, and student leaders at research universities across the State to explore how graduate and professional education can prepare future academics and professionals for effective civic engagement through study, research, and service.
The goal of the symposium is to analyze the condition of civic engagement, service-learning and community-responsive research at the graduate level, consider options for substantially stronger encouragement and support of these efforts – both in and outside the curriculum, and stimulate conference participants to design and establish innovative approaches to bringing this about.
The symposium will take place on April 24, 2006 at Stanford. The keynote speaker is Lee S. Shulman, President, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Plenary and break-out sessions will explore theoretical and philosophical foundations for civic engagement within and across professional disciplines and doctoral programs, and showcase innovative programmatic expressions within and among departments and schools within California and across the U.S.
For further information and to register please go to:
We look forward to seeing you at Stanford!

Mayor's First "City-Wide Day of Service with Our Youth" - View Photos |
Saturday, October 8 - 8:00 am to 1:00 pm Venice High School
Give back to your local community and meet the mayor of LA all in the same day. Join us in the Mayor's First "City-Wide Day of Service with our Youth."
The Day of Service will focus on our youth and their public high schools and through this effort begin to build a partnership between the city and our schools. It will underline the Mayor's commitment to our schools and community service in general. Service activities include starting and/or supporting existing community projects such as tree planting, mural painting, water fountain repairs, house makeovers, landscaping, community gardens, graffiti removal, street cleaning, bulky item pick up, alley clean up, etc. A door-to-door community education campaign will accompany the service activities with a message from the Mayor that informs residents about city services and a call to watch out for our kids as they travel to and from their schools to their homes.
At the end of the events, volunteers will return to an area at their schools for closing remarks and lunch. Mayor Villaraigosa will be in attendance and of service in each area throughout the day.
In order to make this first of many Days of Service a success, we need you! Volunteer at our target high school: Venice High School
A t-shirt, lunch, and transportation will be provided free of charge. All that you need to do is RSVP to Monica Sanchez Rivas by 5 pm on Friday, October 7, 2005 at csc@gsa.asucla.ucla.edu or call Rob Kadota at (310) 825-4675 if you will be needing transportation. If you have your own transportation, parking will be provided for you at the Venice High School parking lot.
If you need transportation you can board a bus to Venice High School at 7:30 am on the south side of the UCLA campus at Charles E. Young Drive just above Bruin Walk. Show your school pride and wear your UCLA gear, as well as comfortable working clothes and shoes. |
