Overview
Many graduate students have expressed feeling food-insecure. Food insecurity is defined as the disruption of food intake or eating patterns because of lack of money and other resources. One of the resources that targets food insecurity is CalFresh. CalFresh is California’s version of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), a federally-funded food assistance program, colloquially known as food stamps.
Many graduate students report struggling through the CalFresh application process. Part of this is due to the fact that the CalFresh administration is unfamiliar with the funding structure of graduate programs and does not know how to read our income documents. One way to mitigate this is to petition to have your graduate program recognized as a program that increases employability.
GSA is working closely with the Community Programs Office (CPO) and Graduate Division (GD) to register every UCLA graduate program through CalFresh to make the application process easier for students.
