About.Graduate student journals supported by GSA Publications are one of UCLA’s best-kept secrets and one of its most important assets in fostering new ways of thinking about scholarly communication. GSA’s publishing program, one of the largest of its kind in the country, has always supported less commercially viable and socially progressive scholarship and often under-supported forms of scholarly communication such as aggregation as well as traditionally defined areas of intellectual endeavor. GSA Publications’ graduate student journals are ahead of the general scholarly curve in actively seeking out new ways to generate and disseminate knowledge by adopting new models, new methods, and new partnerships. Dear distinguished Journals and Editors,
I hope this finds you well. I'm writing to formally introduce myself to you and to update you on the GSA Publications funds for this academic year of 2020-2021.
My name is Amira Hassnaoui and I am a PhD student in the Department of World Arts & Cultures/Dance. I had the honor to be recently appointed as the new GSA Director of Publications. As you were previously informed by my colleague and Vice President of Academic Affairs Letty, it has been very challenging to manage the GSA Publications this year due to two major factors:
This led me to rebuild and reconstruct the GSA Publications from scratch with the help and support of my colleague Letty. This meant having to learn and navigate several steps including gaining access to the GSA Publications email account and other websites to purchase ISBN and barcodes for your respective journals. In addition, we've been responding to countless emails and questions regarding lingering issues from last year. This is just to give you a very brief overview on what we have been navigating since the Summer.
For this year, I have been developing a vision that would hopefully make the process much more equitable for everyone but also a process that values quality over quantity. This means taking several aspects into consideration when applying for funds to GSA publications.
Below I'm providing you with:
Please make sure you read the disclaimer fully and carefully. You will need to sign it and submit it with your application, along with an itemized budget. All applications are due by Wednesday, March 17th at 11:59 pm PST.
I'm looking forward to working with you and supporting your contributions to knowledge productions.
Kind Regards,
Amira Hassnaoui

As you were previously informed by my colleague and Vice President of Academic Affairs Letty, it has been very challenging to manage the GSA Publications this year due to two major factors:
- A delay in my hiring due to administrative processing.
- The previous GSA publications Office unfortunately did not provide any transition documents for me or our office when I took up the position.
This led me to rebuild and reconstruct the GSA Publications from scratch with the help and support of my colleague Letty. This meant having to learn and navigate several steps including gaining access to the GSA Publications email account and other websites to purchase ISBN and barcodes for your respective journals. Below I'm providing you with:
- The link to the application.
- A Disclaimer document with the guidelines for this academic year's application process (2020-2021), that also outlines some changes to the application process for next academic year's application process (2021-2022).
- A sample budget for those that need an example.
Please make sure you read the disclaimer fully and carefully. You will need to sign it and submit it with your application, along with an itemized budget. All applications are due by Wednesday, March 17th at 11:59 pm PST.
